About ALC
The Groote Eylandt archipelago is situated on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria and has a unique and pristine ecology. The archipelago encompasses three Indigenous communities– Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra (Bickerton Island) and the mining community, Alyangula. The Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC) is the principal Aboriginal body representing the interests of the Warnindilyakwa people of the Groote Archipelago. The ALC's vision is to protect, maintain and promote Warnindilyakwa culture, to invest in the present and build a self-sustaining future that creates pathways for youth to stand in both worlds.

About The Role
This position is responsible for providing specialist advice, training and support to the Language Centre team members in order to actively preserve and protect the Anindilyakwa language for generations to come.

The Linguist is required to advise of best practice methods for recording and documenting language, update and expand resources and data bases, consult with community, and facilitate and build stakeholder relationships. This position involves training and mentoring to build the capacity and technical knowledge of Language Officers in accordance with the Language Centre strategic plan.

Reporting to the Language coordinator, this full-time role is based in Umbakumba and Bickerton Island. Housing and other benefits will be provided to the successful applicant. Pre-employment screening, including an AFP criminal record check, may be undertaken on the person who is being recommended for appointment.

About You
In order to be successful for this role you must possess:

  *   Tertiary qualifications in linguists
  *   Extensive experience in recording and documenting linguistics with high level knowledge of linguist concepts and practical applications
  *   Experience working within a remote community
  *   Strong sensitivity of cultural awareness
  *   Excellent team work and communication skills
  *   Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
