The 2018 Western and Northern Aboriginal Languages Alliance Forum will be held at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education’s Batchelor Campus and the Wadeye Community from the 15th to the 19th October 2018.

The theme for this year’s forum is ‘The Language of Art & The Art of Language’. Participants choose from workshop streams:

  * Communication: Traditional and new communication methods, including message sticks and men’s group
  * Documenting language on-country. Mapping and stories using drones
  * The language of art: cultural and political voices in our art
  * Telling our stories: narration with visual resources
  * Managing language centres: managing and sustaining language centres and language archives.

WANALA represents 15 language organisations across WA and the NT . This forum brings them together to learn new communication, documentation, narrative and language skills in a supportive environment. WANALA also extends an invitation to other Language Centres across Australia to participate in the forum to share and learn new skills for language revival and maintainance.

The practical and policy outcomes of the workshops will be presented to the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the National representative the United Nations World Indigenous Languages forums in 2019.
