Dear all,

This is to announce the release of ELAN 5.5.
Serious problems with existing ELAN versions on macOS 10.14.4, have made
us to slightly advance this release, which contains one major and
several smaller improvements. There are again two versions per operating
system; the main versions of this release are now the versions with the
"FX" or "AVFX" suffixes (which include a Java 11 runtime). These
versions will be further developed and the suffixes will be dropped in
(probably) the next release. The older versions (compatible with Java 6)
will be discontinued.

The main (macOS only) improvement in 5.5 is:
- an integrated, native, AVFoundation based media player. The visual
layer of this native player is embedded in the ELAN window (as used to
be the case with the Cocoa-QTKit player in previous versions on macOS)

Other changes include:
- small improvements in the import of tab- or comma separated text files
(user interface and time format detection)
- use of the content language properties of tiers in the export to FLEx
(for the detection of item type and language)
- when saving a video frame as an image, a file name is proposed and the
chosen extension is remembered
- in interlinearization mode, the Parse and Gloss analyzers can match
their input with the variant field(s) in lexical entries and use these
in the suggestions
