As the International Year of Indigenous Languages draws to a close, we will
be holding a very special LIP on the 25th of November
NOTE DIFFERENT VENUE and see important note below: this event is BYO food
and drink!

This is a very special LIP event and the last for this year - the
International Year of Indigenous Languages.

During the first two weeks of September this year, thirteen Community
Researchers from five different language groups from eastern Australia were
based at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Studies (AIATSIS), receiving training and support to explore and interpret
archival material their languages and cultures. During the fortnight, they
also visited the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of
Australia and other institutions.

The workshop, organised by Living Languages and AIATSIS, with support from
Monash University, will help those who participated continue revitalising
their languages so they can learn them and pass them onto the next
generation.

Among the archives, researchers discovered:

   -

   photos of family members they’d not seen before
   -

   forgotten information about their languages – including word lists
   -

   heartbreaking and confronting material, such as descriptions of families
   written in racist, assimilationist language.

Victorian-based Community Researchers, from the Yorta Yorta and Wergeia
languages, will join Living Languages for this special Linguistics in the
Pub to reflect on this powerful workshop, what they found, and what they
plan to do with their discoveries.
Important note re venue:

This special LIP session will be taking place in the Community Roome at
*SITEWORKS* in Brunswick. This is not actually a pub so meals will not be
served. Light refreshments, cutlery, crockery and glasses will be
available. *BYO meals and drink* (alcoholic beverages OK). There are plenty
of takeaway options on Sydney Rd nearby.
