Hi everyone,

TITLES FOR ALW DUE 29 NOVEMBER!

The Australian Languages Workshop (ALW)<http://www.dynamicsoflanguage.edu.au/alw2020/> will be held on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) at the University of Queensland Moreton Bay Research Station, 28 February – 1 March 2020, with an additional day on 2 March dedicated to the theme of emergent language(s).

We welcome presentations on all aspects of First Nations languages. Presentations may be language stories about reconnecting with your language, papers on aspects of grammar, lexicon and sounds, puzzles thrown up through reading old grammars etc. Please email Felicity Meakins<mailto:f.meakins at uq.edu.au> your presentation title (not abstract!) by 29 November. Preference will be given to original presentations not previously given at the Australian Linguistics Society conference or other major conferences with cross-over audiences.

We also welcome presentations in the emergent languages workshop. The workshop aims to provide a forum for the discussion of observations, research in progress and ideas under development on the topic of new First Nations languages and varieties. Diverse methodological approaches are welcome, and community authored papers are particularly encouraged. Please email your title to Jill Vaughan<mailto:j.vaughan at unimelb.edu.au> by 29 November.

In 2020, ALW will feature two Quandamooka plenary presentations from Sandra Delaney<https://www.datsip.qld.gov.au/news-media/deadly-stories/deadly-stories-gallery/south-east-queensland/sandra-delaney>, a linguist who has been instrumental in reclaiming the Jandai language; and Sonja Carmichael<https://ima.org.au/ima-events/loops-and-knots-weaving-workshop-2/>, a fibre artist who is renowned for regenerating local weaving practices. Friday night will be a reception and book launch(es) at the North Stradbroke Island Museum<https://stradbrokemuseum.com.au/>, with dancing by the Yulu-Burri-Ba<https://www.yawar.com.au/cultural-map/dance-groups/yulu-burri-ba> dancers led by Josh Walker.

Two travel bursaries are available for interstate Indigenous participants giving a presentation. Please indicate your interest in a bursary when you email Felicity Meakins<mailto:f.meakins at uq.edu.au> your presentation title.

Regards, Felicity
