We are using Shoebox databases for several languages. It does take a bit of getting used to, and it really helps to spend time with an experienced user. We have had workshops with Nick Thieberger and Albert Burgman, which helped us get started.

The fact that Shoebox can interlinearize texts, using the dictionary file that you create makes this program useful. It really helps with language analysis, and this feature doesn’t exist in programs like FileMaker Pro. I used FileMaker for one dictionary in the past, in this case the language analysis had already been done. It was really difficult to get data out in a nice format for the dictionary, we needed the help of a FMPro ‘expert’. I would most definitely recommend Shoebox rather than FileMaker, as it’s output is great for a dictionary
