<HTML><BODY style="word-wrap: break-word; -khtml-nbsp-mode: space; -khtml-line-break: after-white-space; ">Here's a slightly edited version of a review I wrote in January for the music transcribers list of using vpedal hardware, which you can buy from <A href="http://www.nch.com.au">www.nch.com.au</A> and various other sources. Software version numbers and possibly prices are out of date.<BR><DIV><BR><DIV>Begin forwarded message:</DIV><BR class="Apple-interchange-newline"><BLOCKQUOTE type="cite"><P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">I thought I would report my experience so far with the vPedal I just bought to try out with Transcribe! - cost me $112.75 Australian from mp3direct.com.au, so not too pricey. I have a mac powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.4.</FONT></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">First off, the version of the vpedal mac software that came with the unit (0.7) wasn't up to date and didn't have the 'omni' option that you need for controlling applications other than iTunes and Quicktime. Fortunately you can download the latest version of the software (2.2) from the vpedal site, but I have to say that it wasn't that easy to find the link to the download. It is on this page: <A href="http://www.vpedal.com/omni.php">http://www.vpedal.com/omni.php</A> - and you have to scroll down to the 'installation' heading to find the link to download, and then it didn't behave as it promised (there's no install.command file in the .dmg file, you just drag and drop the app to your application folder as per normal).</FONT></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">On a Mac you have to enable the 'enable assistive devices' tickbox in the bottom of the Universal Access preference window.</FONT></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">Then, following the instructions that come with it I set up so that the vpedal application opens on startup, and added Transcriber and ELAN to the list of 'Other' applications that can be controlled by the vpedal (if you use Transcribe! you don't need to add it here, it has built-in support). You have to select at the top of the vpedal preferences window which application you want controlled at any one time, and then you can set up in vpedal.app which key to map to review, play/pause and cue.</FONT></P><P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica"></FONT></P><P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica"></FONT></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px">For Transcribe! users:<BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">The 'tap pedal' option you can set from inside Transcribe! really doesn't seem to do much good, I couldn't then stop the file playing (in other words, tapping the pedal again didn't put it into pause mode, but just started it playing again), so I now have it set on 'hold play'. I don't use cue and review much normally, so I have the left side pedal (usually assigned to rewind) programmed to set speed to 70% and play, and the right side pedal (usually assigned to fast forward) to reset speed to 100%.</FONT></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Helvetica; min-height: 14.0px"><BR></P> <P style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px"><FONT face="Helvetica" size="3" style="font: 12.0px Helvetica">Transcriber 1.5.1 doesn't seem to work at all with the foot pedal, but ELAN 2.5 (which you can use for audio and video) does.</FONT></P> </BLOCKQUOTE></DIV><BR></BODY></HTML>
