This is to announce the first public release of Simple-ELAN, a simple transcription tool, compatible with ELAN.

Simple-ELAN has a limited set of functions. It's goal is to support easy transcription of audio and video recordings, in principle on a single layer (tier). It can be used for relatively coarse grained scene-level transcription, for per speaker speech transcription or for aligning existing transcripts to their digitized audio/video source.

The main characteristic is that of simultaneous segmentation and transcription; pressing the Enter key creates a new segment based on the current media time and at the same time applies the current text of the editor to the newly created annotation.

A short help document that illustrates the main functions and that lists the keyboard shortcuts is available in the help menu of the application.

The development of Simple-ELAN is supported by the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language.
