A well-written grammar allows linguists, language activists and linguistic typologists to find out what they want to know about a specific language. But what makes a well-written grammar? Should it be broadly accessible, cover a wide range of topics or capture the 'genius' of the language? In order to write a grammar, linguists analyse various parts of the language such as phonology, semantics and syntax. How do they choose which topics to include in the grammar and which to leave out? And how do you balance describing the language on its own terms, with the need to make a description comparable?

We will start with a panel discussion (around 60 minutes) and then we will discuss the issues raised in small groups for about 30 minutes.
