I'm surprised by your subversive view! RST is not only a theory applied by
linguists to analyse texts, it became a 'pivot' of generation methods (as
you know very well). RRs may guide, for instance, formatting of a text or
aggregation of repetitions: do you remember the Hovy 93 paper? The example,
in that case, was about ElaborationObjectAttribute RRs! And a Background
links a picture to its labelling text by establishing their relative
position, in multimedia documents generated by Andre' and Rist.
Maybe these methods might be revised in the light of your proposal ?!...
