The III RST Meeting (in Portuguese “A RST e os Estudos do Texto”) brings together researchers, teachers and students interested on the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) by Mann & Thompson (1988). This meeting will take place on October 25th in the 8th Brazilian Symposium in Information and Human Language Technology (STIL 2011), which will be carried out in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, from October 24th to 26th.

The idea of this meeting, aimed at presenting relevant works on RST to the scientific community,  emerged from the workshop “RST and Text Studies” in the conference 16° Intercâmbio de Pesquisas em Lingüística Aplicada (InPLA) in 2007 at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUCSP). In 2009 the second edition of the workshop was named “RST Brazilian Meeting” and it was linked with STIL 2009 in São Carlos (http://www.inf.ufrgs.br/stil09/ (http://www.inf.ufrgs.br/stil09/)). The III RST Meeting, which comes back to the original name after a debate among the participants of the last workshop, goes on with this initiative.

The RST is a model for discourse representation that has been used with several aims (both practical and theoretical) in Computational Linguistics and Textual Linguistics. Some examples are: automatic summarization, text generation, corpus analysis, discourse knowledge acquisition (for example, discourse markers, connectors, etc.), automatic translation, textual simplification, dialog, information retrieval, information extraction or question-answering, among many others.

This workshop expects to be a multidisciplinary forum joining researchers, teachers and students with different backgrounds (computation, linguistics, information sciences, etc.) working with RST and related theories and models as well as with possible applications of these. Its main aims are the interaction among Brazilian and international research groups; the spreading of resources, tools and applications related to RST; the exploration of the area in Brazil and the establishment of international relations, and the proposal of future guidelines for the area, identifying needs and opportunities.

Dr. Manfred Stede will give the opening conference!
