Dear colleague,

The Sixteenth Meeting of the Southeast Asian Linguistics Society (SEALS XVI)
was held on 20-21 September 2006 in Jakarta. It was jointly sponsored by
the Institute for Language and Culture Studies at Atma Jaya University and
the Jakarta Field Station of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary
Anthropology. A total of 36 papers were delivered in two plenary sessions
and seven parallel sessions by scholars from Australia, Britain, Burma,
Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the
Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and USA. A gala conference
dinner was held at the Kembang Goela restaurant.

At the end of the conference a business meeting was held where the following
topics were discussed:

1. Institutional sponsor for SEALS XVII. Since there were no concrete
offers, it was suggested that an ad hoc committee be formed, with a view to
locating an appropriate sponsoring institution. The following persons
volunteered or were nominated to the committee:

George Bedell
Martha Ratliff
Paul Sidwell
Uri Tadmor

2. Publication of the proceedings. It was suggested that Pacific
Linguistics become the venue for publishing this year's as well as future
SEALS proceedings. The advantages would be speed of publication, electronic
publication, and availability for downloading free of charge.
The deadline for submitting a paper to this year's proceedings is 31
December 2006. Based on this date, publication with Pacific Linguistics
would be expected in June 2007.

It was suggested that a selection process be implemented for acceptance for
publication, based on peer review.

It was also suggested that instead of submitting papers in MSWord and PDF
formats, authors should also be allowed to submit the paper in MSWord format
plus a hard copy.

3. In general, a wish was expressed to have a more formal institution for
SEALS with a more permanent nature, to ensure its viability and continuity.

If you have any comments regarding these or other SEALS related topics,
please feel free to discuss them on this list.

Finally, I¹d like to take this opportunity to thanks all those without whose
help SEALS XVI would not have been possible: my fellow members of the
Organizing Committee, our gracious hosts at the Institute of Language and
Culture Studies at Atma Jaya University, and the entire staff of the Jakarta
Field Station.

Best regards,

Uri Tadmor
