ICAAL 5 (2013)
2nd Circular / Call for Abstracts
Fifth International Conference on Austroasiatic Linguistics
Canberra, September 4-5 2013
website: www.icaal.org

Theme: Painting the Austroasiatic Family Portrait
Following the regrettable cancellation of ICAAL5 due to flooding in Bangkok,
we are delighted to announce that the next ICAAL meeting will be held at the
Australian National University September 4-5 2013, where it will be
immediately followed by the Himalayan Languages Symposium (HLS, Sept. 6-8,
www.himalayansymposium.org).

An important outcome of the 2009 ICAAL was the certainty that the time had
come to produce a comprehensive, canonical reference to the Austroasiatic
language family. We invite you to make your contribution to the “table of
contents” and coverage of this much-needed work. For the 2013 ICAAL conference
we encourage submissions that look at the family from all theoretical and
practical viewpoints, and contribute to painting a complete picture of
Austroasiatic as a complex language family with deep roots across India,
China, and the countries of Southeast Asia.

Submission of abstracts open until May 1st
Abstracts are to be submitted online via the EasyAbs system at:
http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/icaal2013.
Please keep your abstracts to less than 500 words and avoid long lists of
references or numerous data examples. Acceptances will be advised by June 1st.
If you require an earlier acceptance please apply directly to the organisers.

Themed panels
The organizers encourage motivated scholars to lead and coordinate themed
panels of 1½ or 2 hours duration, allowing 3 or 4 presentations on a common
theme. Panel leaders will take responsibility for recruiting and organizing
panels, in consultation with the organizers. Please contact the organizers
directly with your panel proposals.

Keynote Speakers
We are pleased to announce that two speakers, reflecting both older and
younger generations, have provisionally accepted our invitations to deliver
keynote addresses:

•	Prof. (ret.) K. S. Nagaraja, organiser of the 3rd ICAAL meeting held in Pune
(India) in 2009, and respected scholar of Munda and Khasi languages, and
•	Felix Rau (University of Cologne, Germany) up and coming scholar of Munda
languages.

Registration
Registration fees for the two days of the ICAAL meeting will be A$100 for full
registration and A$60 for students. This includes your conference pack,
morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch on two days. Participants will be
able to pay on arrival, or by an online payment facility to be advised. For
convenience registrations for both ICAAL & HLS will be coordinated through a
common platform, details will follow in the next circular.

Dinner and Social Outing
A combined (ICAAL and HLS) conference dinner and social outing will be
arranged, and paid for in addition to the registration fee. We expect the
outing, on Sunday the 8th of September, will give you a chance to see native
Australian wildlife and spectacular outdoor scenery.

Accommodation
A block of rooms for conference participants will be reserved at University
House, which you will be able to book directly or through the organisers.
Currently standard room rates vary from A$99 to A$190 per night depending on
capacity and standard, and we expect to offer a special conference rate. See
University House online at: http://www.anu.edu.au/unihouse/.
Other hotels/motels close to the ANU campus also offer rooms for similar
prices, details will be provided in the next circular.

The opening ceremony and keynote talks will be held in the recently
completed Hedley Bull Centre, with its striking modern architecture and
comfortable lecture theatres. The parallel sessions will be conveniently held
in seminar rooms within University House.
These facilities are within the ANU campus, and there are cafes and
restaurants close by, including the Fellows Bar & Cafe located right below
University House.
They are also only a short walk from the centre of Canberra (known as Civic)
with its shopping, hotels, and transport connections.

Visiting Australia and Canberra
September is a beautiful time to visit Canberra; it is early Spring and
although cool (daily temp. varies on average between 4 and 16ºC, the days are
generally sunny and the air stunningly clear. Being the capital city, there
are many civic attractions, most open free of charge to the public. 2013 also
has many additional attractions as it is the centenary year for the city. For
more details on visiting Canberra see:
