I'd like to add that the issue of academic freedom as an argument in
favor of tenure is NOT an outdated one, as anyone working on Macedonia
and Macedonian can attest.  There have been numerous attempts on the
part of the Greek communities to interfer with academic pursuits that
involve teaching the Macedonian language or scholars who do research
in or about Macedonian.
