Flowers?

        Jerry, I don't know if the odd number has anything to do with
good luck or not, but I know that in Europe no one ever gives an even
number of flowers. It has to do (at least in part) with the arrangement
of the flowers in a vase. Imagine how four flowers look: symmetrical.
It's not a very romantic sight.
        But beside this rather subjective reason
their might be other explanations.
