More idle reading

With regard to George's suggestion for idle reading: Alpatov has another
interesting book about Soviet linguistics in the 1930s--Istorija odnogo mifa
(Marr i Marrizm) (M. 1991). Also interesting, and more practical for truly idle
reading (since it only has six pages), is S. B. Bernshtejn's memoir
"Tragicheskaja stranica iz istorii slavjanskoj filologii (30-e gody XX veka)"
(Sovetskoe slavianovedenie, 1989). This article contains, inter alia, the
anecdote of how the rector of Moscow University, A. Ja. Vyshinskij, scolded
Selishchev and Ushakov in 1927 for the fact that students in Old Church
Slavonic classes read Gospel texts.
