Lest administrators forget:

Our major reason for teaching Russian is the Russians.  These are the
people living in a vast country of enormous economic potential who have
(already!) produced much of the world's great literature, great dance,
great music _and_ great science. Language is associated with all of
those things, and the country, and the people.  That's why
Russian/Slavic departments are a necessity, not a luxury.
