Dostoevskij's source?

In the notes for an unwritten article entitled "Socializm i xristianstvo,"
Dostoevskij states:


Kogda chelovek zhivet massami (v pervobytnyx patriarxal'nyx obshchinax, o
kotoryx ostalis' predanija) -- to chelovek zhivet /neposredstvenno/.
(PSS 20:191)


I would be very interested to know what sources he might have had
regarding these "primitive patriarchal societies."  Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.
