This whole controversy

It seems to me that this whole discussion of Prof. Emerson's Bakhtin book
reflects two different ideas of what it means to have a
discussion/argument. The American scholars (or those who have adopted
American [academic] cultural norms) are trying to be polite,
respectful, and argue the issues. Prof. Khanin prefers a different style.
I, for one, find it distasteful. I don't learn anything from it. Excuse me
if I've misspelled anyone's
name. E. Tall
