raw garlic

Dear Colleagues,
One of my students is from a Ukrainian family and attends a Ukrainian
church in Pittsburgh.  He tells me that on all holidays, the church
attendees eat raw garlic and unleavened bread.  He's wondering where this
custom might come from.  Any thoughts?
