etymology of Belarus

I'd rather assume that the Fasmer's explanation fits into so called "popular etymology'. This is based on the fact that the next neighbor of "Bela Rus" to the west was "Chorna Rus' (Black Rus) and to the southwest - "Chervona Rus' (Red Rus'). Probably there is another - more scientific - etymology, but I can think of none right now.
