New MA Program in Russian and SLAA

Dear SEELANGers,

We are happy to announce that the Russian Program at the University of
Maryland, College Park is opening a new track in addition to the existing
M.A. in Russian Language in the fall of 2001. The new M.A. Program in
Russian and Second Language Acquisition and Application (SLAA) will be part
of the interdepartmental M.A. Program in SLAA, and combine the study of
Russian with courses in second language acquisition and pedagogy. You will
find some general information about the M.A. Program in SLAA below. Please
share this information with the interested students and
ask them to contact Kira Gor, Russian Graduate Director, with any inquiries
about the program. A limited number of teaching assistanships will be
available.

Second Language Acquisition and Application Program

This two-year M.A. program has been designed for researchers, language
teachers, translators and interpreters, government service professionals,
social service employees, and all those interested in the acquisition and
application of languages other than English.

Attain language competency and key cultural insights into French, German,
Russian or Spanish while developing sound theoretical and practical
foundations for research into second language acquisition, pedagogical
perspectives, technological applications, and language use in professional
contexts.

To complete this academic program, all students will take 3 courses in the
Language Core, 4 courses in their chosen concentration area, and 2
electives.  Students may choose to fulfill one of their electives with an
internship.  All students will complete a Capstone project under the
supervision of a faculty member.
