To Hugh Olmsted & all Seelangers,
Thanks, Hugh, for a fascinating and hilarious glimpse at the playfulness of
the Russian linguistic mind.  Regarding the etymology of "Vinchester," I
seem to recall, many years ago, that Winchester was the name of the
manufacturer of industry-standard HDs--from which the Russians generalized.
The 30/30-as-armament piece may have been how the company named itself.
Sound familiar to anyone?
