sports in Russian culture

Dear Colleagues,
Huge topic, I know, but I have a student interested in studying the role of
sports in contemporary Russian society.  I am trying to get him to narrow
this down, and I wondered if any of you might have suggestions? Are there
any studies of sports in Russian literature or film, for instance, that
deal at all with contemporary Russia? I am at sea on this one and will be
grateful for any thoughts.
