The distinguished culture historian Aby Warburg (d. 1929) certainly adopted
the maxim: 'Der liebe Gott steckt im Detail', probably in the early years of
this century, but there is as yet no consensus on the ultimate origin. For
the very latest (complicated) opinion on the matter see G. Mastroianni, 'Il
buon Dio di Aby Warburg' in "Belfagor", 55(iv), 2000, pp. 413-42.
