Contemporary Russia exists within a European heritage in terms of
culture, yet in military, economic, and political terms, it resides
outside the European order. This discursive schizophrenia is the focus
of the 2001 Russian Film Symposium, "Evropsk, Russia: Out of European
Order?", taking place May 1-6 at U. of Pittsburgh. Participants are
asked to examine cinematic representations of Russia as redolent of this
tension and shifting status.

Screenings focusing on the theme of Russia and the Caucasus will include
Abdrashitov's Time of the Dancer, Bodrov's Prisoner of the Caucasus,
Ibragimbekov's Family, Rogozhkin's Checkpoint, and other films. Among
the guests of the Symposium will be Rustam Ibragimbekov and Aleksandr
Mindadze.
