I suppose you refer to "afta" ?
May come from the French "aphte", that comes from the medicinal Latin
"aphtae" (Gueroult, 1545), that comes from the Greek "aphtai", from
"haptein" (to burn).
Meaning : painfull intra-buccal ulcer.
