Estetika bezobraznogo/ Aesthetics of the Ugly

Although I cannot recall anyone who is / has been concentating particularly
on the "aesthetics of the ugly," I have found that the question is treated
to some degree in most solid works on Decadence (neo-Romanticism) in art and
literature, including works on Decadence's forebears such as Poe,
Baudelaire, and Huysmans of course. Dostoevsky (in "Zapiski iz-pod pola,"
the the Svidrigajlov parts of PRESTUPLENIE I NAKAZANIE, for instance)
wielded some influence on Russian Decadence with respect to such
"aesthetics," too. The question of such aesthetics in Romanticism is also
treated by Mario Praz in THE ROMANTIC AGONY ("ch. 1: "The Beauty of the
Medusa").
