Hello there,
  You probably know the whole history of Matreshka. Whenever I see
one in Russia I am reminded of a story of Dharma, who is said to
have lost his arms and legs while meditating very hard.
Ordinary Japanese wooden dolls with female drawings("kokesi") have narrower
part at the neck as they stand for young women, not Dharma, the
Indian Buddhist priest.


Well, that has nothing to do with Matreshka's semiotics. I beg your pardon.
