Ralph Cleminson may well be right about the origin, but later mystical and
popular exegesis is clearly another matter. A quick search for the rather
arcane technical term for the footrest 'suppedaneum' on Google gave a
surprising 200 entries, some very relevant to this thread. I must say
Genevra's original query has elicited a good deal of fascinating information,
for which I, for one, am very grateful.
