Dear SEELANGers,

As you might know, the Russian Summer School at Norwich University, one of
the oldest in America, was closed on the eve of the new century and
millennium. However the end of Norwich's School did not lead to the
interruption of one of its most glorious traditions. An Annual Literary
Symposium, which hosted in the past many prominent scholars of various
generations, has moved to Middlebury College Russian School. Symbolically,
the theme of the 1st Middlebury Symposium, held in July 2001, was "Nachalo
veka kak kul'turnyi fenomen." The Symposium began July 20 with a lecture by
Professor Lev Loseff of Dartmouth College and a concert by Russian pianist
Tatyana Yampolskaia. The Symposium continued July 21st and 22nd with the
following papers:

Ilya Vinitsky (University of Pittsburgh). "Russkoe Probuzhdenie:
1800-1810-e gg.

Nina Perlina (Indiana University). O nauke, kotoraia poteriala svoe
nazvanie.

You may familiarize yourself with the detailed discussion of the 1st
Middlebury Symposium in Lilya Pan's article "Na luzhaikakh istorii" in
Novoe Russkoe Slovo, Uikend 4-5 avgusta 2001, str. 38.

The organizers hope that in the new place and new century the old tradition
will be successfully continued. The topic for next year symposium is
"Amerika glazami russkikh" A call for papers will be announced shortly.
