PDF and Cyrillic -- an explanatory note

Dear friends:

The Cyrillic font thread as it concerns Windows, Mac or
Unix/Linux never seems to end on our lists. The whole
problem of fonts and codings is an exceedingly complex
one. Someday, everything will be on automatic. Perhaps
sooner than we realize in view of the spread of Unicode,
etc. Meanwhile, we all have to do the best we can. While I
am not a programmer, by any stretch of the imagination,
and understand very little about the intricacies of fonts (one
of the most arcane fields of computer programming), let
alone the bewildering varieties of Cyrillic encodings, I do try
to pass on any information that might be of value to list
members. That is the reason for the PDF messages. You
can explore this subject elsewhere on the Net, in various
forums, by using the search engines or, if you wish, you can
use my Index (Z-Computers) as the starting point. Hope this
helps.
