For those who have the courage to work in Unix and learn
LaTeX2e, it has long been possible to generate pdf files.
The TeTex packages that come nowadays with many modern Linux
distributions has the necessary drivers. I'm currently
formatting a book of poetry using the package and am very
pleased with the results. With the Babel package it is
capable of printing Cyrillic. It's use is not for the lazy,
however; the learning curve seems steep at first.
