Dear SEELANGers:

The Chronicle of Higher Education (Nov. 7, 2003, p. A12) reports on
the American Council on Education's review of the
"internationalization" of higher education in the US. A pdf summary
of the ACE report is available on its website at <www.acenet.edu>;
the report itself can be purchased on-line at the ACE website.

Some statistics that may be of interest:

64% of college students enrolled in foreign language courses in the
US study Spanish

"The narrow focus of foreign language enrollments poses a serious
danger to US ability to communicate effectively with other nations."

Only 27% of colleges require foreign language study.
Only 12% of students surveyed participated in study abroad programs

Sincerely,

Ben Rifkin
