Linguistically, the Census Bureau's assumption that Chinese is a single
language is fallacious, of course.  The difference between
Mandarin/"Modern Standard Chinese" and Cantonese (the speech of
Guangzhou and Hong Kong) is at least as great as the difference
between Polish and Russian, and certainly greater than the difference
between Thai and Lao.
