readings for heritage speakers course

Dear SEELANGSers,
I am looking for suitable 19th century Russian prose readings to teach a course for heritage speakers. I need something that is off the beaten path (by the "beaten path"  I mean books that are often taught,  like "Fathers and Sons" and "Crime and Punishment), that has a relatively easy language, and that would have a more or less fun story line.
