Questions for Russian translators

I am in the process of applying for graduate school next fall (2005) for a
master's degree.  My goal is to become a translator (Russian to English),
probably of technical documents rather than literature.  However, I do not know a
lot about translating as a career, so I'm seeking any advice from those who are
currently doing or have done something similar to this.  For example: which
school/program you attended (specifically master's programs), how you found your
first job and what kind of job it was (e.g., contract work, government job,
academic publishing, etc.), and any other useful things to know about:
certification programs, for instance.
I appreciate any advice you can offer.
