INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
“Commodity, Consumer, Entrepreneur: Women and the Marketplace”
June 24-25, 2005
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign


Sponsored by American Women in Slavic Studies (AWSS) and
UIUC Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC).


KEYNOTE SPEAKER: NADEZHDA AZHGIKHINA, Russian Union of Journalists

The conference will focus on women’s experience in the marketplace in Russia, Eastern Europe and
Eurasia.  While developments in the region from 1985 to 2005 are of particular interest, historical
and chronologically comparative topics are also welcome.  AWSS and REEEC invite proposals for
individual papers, panels (wi th chair and discussant) and roundtables. We are looking for
proposals from any field of Slavic/ East European/ Eurasian studies, including economics,
anthropology, sociology, media, law, history, literature, political science, cultural studies,
policy studies, and any other aspect of women's studies. Interdisciplinary work and proposals from
representatives of NGOs are also welcome.

Limited funding for graduate students is available.

All proposals are due March 15, 2005. Applicants will be notified the first week of April.
Proposals for panels/papers must include:
1) A 150-200 word abstract for each paper; and
2) A one-page CV for each participant.
