Translation help

[Natalia Pylypiuk]

Dear Colleagues,

In the sonnets of Ivan Svitlychnyi, a Ukrainian dissident who was  
incarcerated
between 1972 and 1983, there appears prison vocabulary which
I need to translate into idiomatic English.

Although I know the meaning of *parasha* and *shmon* / serzhant  
*shmonaie*, I am not
quite sure how to English them.
