Static Launch Event
6.30pm, Monday 31st October
Spitz Gallery, Old Spitalfields Market
The London Consortium is delighted to announce the launch of Static, its new
online journal and resource.
The inaurgural issue, launching on Hallowe'en, takes Play and Violence' as
its theme, exploring different forms of recreational frenzy in artistic,
philosophical, social, and political contexts. The result is a
cross-cultural and multidisciplinary interpretation of play and violence as
a form of discourse, an underscoring of interrelations between torture and
triviality, levity and hate, drama and social interaction.
>From Hallowe'en and into the future, Static will be at the heart of
interdisciplinary intellectual debate about the paradoxes of contemporary
culture. With contributions from an international team of academics, artists
and cultural practitioners, Static's contents will include analytical essays
and articles, interviews, art projects, photographic images, and more. Each
new issue will centre on a specific theme, and all issues will be regularly
updated to include the most recent and relevant ideas and interpretations.
The Static launch event will feature contributions by Professor Steven
Connor (Academic Director, The London Consortium, Professor of English,
Birkbeck College) and Gulsen Bal (visual artist, theoretician, and curator).
The launch event is open to anyone interested in finding out more about this
exciting new web resource. Please email uk_static at yahoo.co.uk to confirm
