You may well be on to something here - The 1978 edition of Velikobritaniya Lingvostranovedcheskii slovar' clearly states (p.62):
????? - ???????????? ???? ???????????? ????????????, ??????? - ???????????? ???? ????????????? ???????????? (sinii - traditsionnyi tsvet Oksfordskogo universiteta, goluboi - traditsionnyi tsvet Kembridzhskogo universiteta).
