Hermaphrodites and Literature

Dear Seelangs List,

I am currently undertaking research on the intersection between the notions
of the hermaphrodite and the female homosexual in late nineteenth century
Russian literature.

Does anyone know of earlier sources conflating the two notions
(hermaphroditism and homosexuality) or making a necessary connection
between the two (particularly nineteenth century sources)?  I know in
English literature there is a tendency to collapse the categories of
androgyny and hermaphroditism and was wondering if this was the same in
the Russian case.
