Turgenev's story "Stuk, stuk, stuk" does indeed end in suicide for just
such the reasons you describe.

It's one of later stories that deal with the supernatural (others
include "Faust," "Rasskaz ottsa Aleksseia," Son," "Sobaka," "Prizraki,"
"Neschatsnaia," "Strannia istoriia," "Pesn' torzhestvuiushvhiei liubvi,"
and "Klara Milich").

Not a Russian one, but I think along the same lines is a novella by Guy
de Maupassant "Le Horla". But maybe I don't remember the plot correctly,
I read it many-many years ago.
