Art attacks

I happened to be in Leningrad at the time of this attack.  My recollection is that it was reported (on the OBS network, if not officially) as a political incident and that there were no artistic reasons why this painting, as opposed to any other, had been selected.

How about the man who attacked Rembrandt's "Danae" in the Hermitage, ripping 
it severely, in the 1980s? The restored painting is featured prominently in 
Alexander Sokurov's "Russian Ark" (2002).
