I'd never heard this word either, and based on Daniel's comments, I 
referred to this source on my shelf:

"Сарыч" appears in four entries:

778 Buteo (the entire genus, where some species are called сарыч and 
some are called канюк, and a few are called курганник, just as the 
English has buzzard for some and hawk for others)

782 B. brachypterus = сарыч мадагаскарский короткокрылый = Madagascar 
buzzard

784 B. buteo = канюк обыкновенный, сарыч = common buzzard

787 B. jamaicensis = сарыч краснохвостный = red-tailed hawk, red-tailed 
buzzard

Regarding the US/UK use of "hawk" vs. "buzzard": as with B. jamaicensis, 
they have similar paired treatments for B. aurigalis, B. lagopus, B. 
regalis, B. solitarius, and B. ventralis. But for most of the 25 
species, they choose one or the other:

hawks (14 spp.) -- B. albicaudatus, B. albonotatus, B. brachyurus, B. 
galapagoensis, B. hemilasius, B. leucorrhous (aka Buteola leucorrhoa), 
B. lineatus, B. magnirostris, B. nitidus, B. platypterus, B. 
poecilochrous, B. polyosoma, B. ridgwayi, B. swainsoni.

buzzards (5 spp.) -- B. brachypterus, B. buteo, B. oreophilus, B. 
rufinus, B. rufofuscus.


All four members of genus Bustatur, and the genus itself, are called 
"канюк" (with various modifiers) in this source, thus:
Bustatur = канюк ястребиный = buzzard-eagle
B. indicus = канюк ястребиный = gray-faced buzzard
B. liventer = канюк краснокрылый = rufous-winged buzzard-eagle
B. rufipennis = канюк саранчовый = grasshopper buzzard(-eagle)
B. teesa = канюк белоглазый = white-eyed buzzard-eagle


They also include the following cautionary note in their introduction:

Из примерно 8,5 тысяч видов птиц, составляющих орнитологическую фауну 
мира, твердо установившиеся русские названия имеют лишь 15-20 процентов. 
Это нередко приводит к путанице, особенно в тех случаях, когда речь идет 
  о видах, не входящих в фауну СССР. Поэтому мы приняли решение 
предложить и формально закрепить в словаре русские названия для всех без 
исключения видов птиц, которые их не имели. Были разработаны единые 
принципы построения русских названий, в соответствии с которыми каждому 
роду присвоено одно- или двухсловное наименование, которое строго 
выдерживается по всему объему таксона. Для обозначения вида добавляется 
прилагательное, которое, в соответствии с общепринятыми правилами, 
помещается перед родовым названием [reversed order above is mine -- 
pbg]. Таким образом, среди полных видов названий преобладают двух- и 
трехсловные. Исключение представляют некоторые твердо установившиеся 
однословные названия (например, стерх, шилохвость, зяблик), а также 
названия видов, относящихся к монотипическим родам с однословным 
наименованием. Неуклонное следование этому принципу позволило избежать 
дублирования, опасность которого при создании тысяч новых названий 
достаточно велика.

The discrepancy between the 11,060 entries and the 8,500 species is due 
to the fact that the dictionary lists genera, families, and orders, as 
well as intermediate taxa such as subfamilies.
