The 2007 Ralph and Ruth Fisher Forum will be held at the University of
Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 and
concluding on the evening of Saturday, June 16. The topic of this year's
forum, which will include five panels and two round tables, is "Aleksandr
Solzhenitsyn as Writer, Myth-Maker and Public Figure." It will bring
together the University of Illinois faculty with colleagues from the U.S.,
Russia, France and Britain whose interests include literature, history,
philosophy, political science, military history, and journalism.
The forum's importance as a scholarly event will be enhanced by the
participation of the writer's wife, Mrs. Natalia Solzhenitsyn, and two of
their sons, Ignat and Stephan Solzhenitsyn. Mrs. Solzhenitsyn will deliver
the keynote address, "Another Time, Another Burden: Solzhenitsyn after His
Return to Russia," and will participate in a question-and-answer session on
the first day of the forum. Conference participants will place the writer
and his productions in a variety of theoretical frameworks, including those
provided by cultural, semiotic, and gender studies. They will examine
Solzhenitsyn's writings in their Russian context, but will also discuss his
connection to European and American culture. The writer's rejection of
neo-liberal economic policies and American cultural influences will be
compared with critical responses to the process of globalization in Western
Europe, South America and elsewhere.
