Yes. I recall working as a journalist in Beirut (late 60s) and getting a 
frantic telegram from my mother--according to the LA Times, most of Beirut was in 
flames, one huge riot, etc.   At the times there were some minor and localized 
demonstrations and I was walking around without even having to show my ID 
card.   "If it bleeds, it leads."
