Thanks to all who offered advice on the Czech expletive "Blazne!"  My  
colleague, Sharon O'Brien, who is editor for the Norton Critical  
Edition of Cather's works also sends her thanks.  The context within  
the story has led us to conclude that something like "you fool!" is  
actually appropriate.  (The expletive is yelled at a horse who shies  
from a jump.  Whether one yells "Fool!" at horses is another matter....)
