Vocative for nominative

The vocatives of certain masculine hypocoristics are common in
nominative function in colloquial Polish and in some Polish dialects,
e.g., _Stasiu_, _dziadziu_, _wujciu_ instead of _Stasio_, _dziadzio_,
_wujcio_. Jan Miodek has suggested that this may be the result of a
phonetic process of assimilation of the vowel "o" to the preceding
consonant, later potentially reinterpreted as vocative for nominative,
whence _mistrzu_ for _mistrz_.
