True. Either way, I don't think Chekhov authored a work by the same
title as Shcheglov's; rather, he had coined the concept of "dachnyi
muzh" in his short play (and, as Yuri Corrigan pointed out, the
prequential short story), which seemed to inspire Shcheglov's
full-length comedy.

He might also be referring to the story "Odin iz mnogih" (1887) which
was later turned into the one-act, "Tragik ponevole".
